Shrewsbury Prison

Shrewsbury Prison, locally known as the Dana, was built in 1793 and designed by the architect Thomas Telford. Shrewsbury Prison was in operation until March 2013 when it was closed due it its over crowding rate of 183% housing 326 inmates when it was only meant to have 178. Until 1961 the prison participated in carrying out both public and private executions and there were eight on site until this form of capital punishment was abolished in 1969.

Since 2013 the prison has served as the location for many films and TV shows including The Apprentice, Happy Valley, Celebrity Hunted, Coronation Street and many more. The Prison is also open to the public for multiple tours and activities including self-guided and group tours, ghost tours and escape rooms.
